Become efficient or pay the price.....
UK industry and commerce is being warned it must invest in energy efficient equipment or face financial and moral forfeits in the years ahead. The stark warning comes from Manchester-based Teco Westinghouse - the world's fifth largest electric motor manufacturer - on the eve of implementation of the Government's Climate Change Levy.
From April 1 2001, industry and commerce will be charged a tax on the energy it uses - gas, electricity, coal and liquid petroleum gas.
A typical industry electricity bill will rise by around 13% with major energy intensive industries, such as production and processing using most and, therefore, facing the largest rise.
The levy is part of a worldwide commitment to cut back on energy use as a way of reducing 'greenhouse gas effect' and global warming.
The UK Government has set a target of 20% reduction in CO2 by 2010.
It has already been estimated that industry and commerce wastes around 15-20% of its energy. From April, the Government will tax UK industry and commerce around an extra £1billion a year under the Climate Change Levy.
"This is a major new financial burden facing industry and commerce," warned Teco Westinghouse European Sales Manager Phil Hall. "But, it is also clearly part of a moral obligation on industry to work towards reducing CO2 emissions and therefore the global greenhouse gas effect."
Assistance
To assist businesses to meet the challenge, the Government is introducing the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme allowing companies investing in new and approved energy efficient equipment such as high efficiency motors and variable speed drives, to claim the full capital cost in the first year.
With an extensive range of motors and variable speed drives all registered with the Government as 'high efficiency', Teco Westinghouse is embarking on a programme educating and informing industry and commerce about the new regulations.
Energy site surveys
"We are offering energy site surveys, where we will look in detail at energy use and costs. We can then provide advice as to how and where industry can reduce energy costs, gain from the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme and become more energy efficient. This can all be achieved through the use of high efficiency motors and variable speed drives," said Hall.
Research shows that a high efficiency EFF1 motor will reach payback in under a year of installation - that is it will have saved more in energy costs than the motor itself cost.
"The world is awakening to the need to reduce energy consumption," said Hall. "There is a clear path for heavy energy consumers like industry and commerce - they can pay higher taxes and continue to use excess energy OR they can adopt energy efficiency policies, save money and become more efficient."
Information on energy savings can be obtained from Teco Westinghouse by phoning 0161 877 8025.

London & South East Open Day for Expanding Wilson Electric.....
An event at Chatham, Kent, in early April will examine ways of minimising the impact on business costs of the Government's new climate change levy. The charge, to be introduced in April, will mean higher energy bills for industry and commerce.
London and south east firms have the opportunity to find out how they can minimise the higher energy bills and claim capital allowance towards the cost of new energy efficient equipment at an event being hosted by Wilson Electric, one of the region's longest established electrical engineers.
Celebrating 50 years serving the south east from their London offices, the event also marks Wilson Electric's expansion with the opening of an office in Maidstone to serve local businesses.
Together with Teco Westinghouse, the world's fifth largest manufacturer or electric motors, Wilson Electric will use the event on April 4 to explain the levy and allowance implications to firms.
The open-day is being held at the Bridgewood Manor Hotel, Bridgewood Roundabout, Walderslade Woods, Chatham, Kent, on April 4.

Motors and Drives from TECO Westinghouse have been successfully commissioned to operate crushers at the UK's most advanced new quarry operation. Tilcon Northern's major quarry plant at Linton, near Skipton in Yorkshire, will process up to two million tonnes of limestone a year when it comes into operation later this year.
TECO Westinghouse was awarded the contract to supply motors and drives which will operate the secondary and tertiary crushers - the largest of their type in the U.K. - by the main contractor Fairport Engineering.
The TECO Westinghouse contract included the supply, testing and commissioning of motors and drives plus operator training and ongoing servicing.
Working with Fairport and Tilcon Northern, TECO Westinghouse evolved a cost effective solution to the continuous production and close control requirements needed for the quarry's successful operation.
TECO Westinghouse supplied a 2000kVA ONAN 11kV to 690V stepdown/phase shift transformer with integral primary ring main unit, and secondary MCCBs, 12 pulse variable speed OPTIM drives rated at 450kW and 1000kW, and six pole 690V cage induction motors with inverter rated insulation systems.
The drives and motors are co-ordinated to the crusher torque t/n characteristics, and rated to effectively handle crusher short term overloads.
This is one of the largest UK contracts for TECO Westinghouse who have previously supplied motors for quarries including the huge opencast Mae Moh Mine in Thailand.

TECO Westinghouse has expanded and strengthened its drives team as demands for its drives products - spearheaded by the highly successful Minicon launch - continue to push ahead. The drives team, led by European Drives Manager Neil Messenger, has been expanded with the recruitment of Dan Hetherington and the internal move of David Worthington Grime.
Dan, aged 24, joins Trafford Park based TECO Westinghouse as a drives specialist after over a year in the soft start sector. He is an honours graduate in electrical and electronic engineering from Manchester University. A keen basketball player, Dan (who lives in Shrewsbury) plays for Shrewsbury in the Worcester league.
David, from Bolton, has been with TECO Westinghouse for four years and now moves from his role as North West Sales Engineer to the Drives team.
"TECO Westinghouse remains one of the few companies to manufacture both motors and drives. This gives us the capability of tailoring packages to meet customers' individual requirements" said Neil.
Recent examples are the installation of TECO Westinghouse variable speed drive packages at Ford Motor Company's vehicle test centre at Dunton, Essex. Also, packages for Tilcon Northern's major new quarry plant at Linton, near Skipton, Yorkshire.
"Our drives range - complemented most recently by the addition of the micro drive (the Minicon) for motor outputs as low as 0.27kW - gives TECO Westinghouse the widest range of drives of any manufacturer".
"With major and continuing investment in technology, we now have a strong and dedicated team specialising in drives" said Neil. |

TECO Westinghouse has more than trebled the output of its 'palm size' Minicon drive. Launched last year for motor outputs 0.27kW to 0.75kW, the Minicon range has been extended up to 2.2kW. At 118mm (wide) x 143mm (high) x 172mm (deep) - and weighing less than 1.67Kg, the new Minicon packs even more into their compact design.
"Minicon has been a tremendous success and given TECO Westinghouse a strong foothold in the competitive palm drive sector" said Neil Messenger, TECO Westinghouse European Drives Manager. "Now, with this latest development, the Minicon offers much increased output whilst retaining its small size."
With its high cost efficiency - a hallmark of TECO Westinghouse - drives in the Minicon range feature a built-in EMI filter and easy-to-use operation. With DIN rail mounting, the Minicon drives operate with sinusiodal wave PWM control.
Minicons are available through the TECO Westinghouse UK distributor network.
